Workshop at Daufuskie Blues
Overview: Seven years ago, what began as a 2-year hobby for Leanne McJunkin Coulter and Rhonda Davis, blossomed into Daufuskie Blues. Their quaint studio is located in the historic Mary Field School on Daufuskie Island, one nautical mile from Hilton Head, SC. Both Leanne and Rhonda are native to the Island. They have continued their study of natural dyes and textile embellishment, inspired by the history of indigo on their island and in South Carolina. Leanne and Rhonda have attended studio workshops and lectures by international textile artists including Catherine Ellis, Gaseli Adeyemo, Michael Garcia, Jane Callender, Brian Whitehead, and John Marshell.
An exponent of sustainable textile practices, the love the process of indigo dying, the creativity of shibori handwork, as well as the connection to history, ancient and foreign cultures, and the mythology and mystique that surrounds the indigo plant and it’s color. They have plans to cultivate and their own dye garden which will include indigo and other dye plants.
Look for their work as Daufuskieblues on Instagram and Facebook, and at their website daufuskieblues.com.
