A Taste of Spinning with a Drop Spindle will introduce the mechanics of spinning prepared natural fiber into yarn. Students will learn about the variations in natural fibers, their uses, and the intricacies of how each is spun. Students will also learn techniques of drafting and the mechanics of handling a drop spindle. This is an excellent opportunity to learn the basic skills needed for spinning.
Long before the spinning wheel was invented, drop spindles were used to twist plant and animal fibers into yarn using of weights and gravity. Everything from ships sails to clothing began with the drop spindle. If you are interested in spinning fibers, beginning with a drop spindle will give you a great technical foundation as well as a solid knowledge of fibers. Drop spindles are inexpensive, can be made by hand and are very portable!
Hand spindles are available from the Guild studio and may be used for a month with completion of a rental form. After the first month a spindle may be rented for a small fee.
