Join Sheryl St. Germain as she shares her wisdom and shows you how to use earth pigments to color fabric.  You will create several samples of fabrics that are pigmented using earth minerals and soy milk, using several different techniques. They can be used as “whole cloth” as is and sewn or stitched on, and can also be cut up and pieced in a small art quilt.

There will be a $20 materials fee payable to Sheryl for soybeans, a wide variety of earth pigment colors, and tools

Participants need to bring:

--a yard or more of 100% bleached linen that has been washed and cut into squares (no smaller than 12x12)  or rectangles. They can also bring some washed cotton if they would like to try that.  Sheryl will provide some canvas samples to work on.  

--scissors

--small bits of any kind of cloth, string, thread or anything else that is absorbent and that we can use as a kind of resist (we call them “thieves” because they steal the color from the earth mineral paint).

--any kind of nonabsorbent things that can be used as resists such as popsicle sticks, flat foam, stencils etc.  Sheryl will also have some on hand.

--apron

--gloves if they don’t like getting their hands dirty.  I don’t always use them because the earth pigments don’t stain

--notebook

--a blender, stick or regular (for making the soy milk)

--cloths for cleaning

--a beverage and lunch if desired
