Overshot is a tradition weave structure in which a plain weave ground cloth is
woven with one weft yarn. A second thicker weft yarn weaves a decorative
pattern over the ground cloth. Great examples of Overshot are found in 19 th
century coverlets. Though the pattern looks complex, it is easily woven with a 4-
harness loom and 2 shuttles. The results can be anything but traditional! Overshot
weave structure is perfect for table linens, blankets, throws and pillows. Using
non-traditional weft yarns create endless possibilities. Overshot patterns can form
boarders and accents for clothing and accessories.
Students participating in A Taste of Overshot Patterns will weave on four
separate 4-harness table looms. Each loom has been pre-warped and threaded
with a different pattern. Students will take turns weaving samples on all four
looms. Students will go home with samples of Overshot patterns including drafts
and notes. A 5 th loom will be set up showing how a combination of threading and
tromping can create very intricate patterns.
This class is appropriate for both new and experienced weavers who wish to go
beyond plain weave and twill. Please note this is not a beginning “how to weave
class.” Students are encouraged to have at least minimal experience weaving on
any type of loom. A basic understanding of how to read a pattern is helpful.
Please contact Janet if you have questions.
Janet has yet to meet a fiber art that she did not like. She began sewing as a child
and weaving in her teens. She attended dressmaking and design school and has
sewn costumes for the Pittsburgh Ballet, historical reenactment and various
theater groups. She happily collects looms and yarn. Janet is happiest weaving
intricate patterns with hand painted yarn. She also is obsessed with indigo and all
things that are blue.
This is a 2-day class.
Class is limited to 4 students.
